Using Variation Theory to Enhance Students' Capability in Solving Pedigree This thesis reports on a learning study that employed variation theory to enhance

Variation theory offers a theoretical framework from which to explore possible variations in experience and the resulting differences in learning and understanding. According to variation theory, there are a limited number of features of a given phenomenon to which we can pay attention at any given time. Variation Theory is based on four key principles from Cognitive Science, namely that (1) the capacity of working memory is very limited, (2) every experience presents innumerable features that might consume one’s attention, (3) established collective knowledge tends to be well structured and reliant on highly specific “critical features,” and (4) humans are exquisitely attuned to change/difference. What is variation theory? VT, while used predominantly in mathematics teaching, is not specifically a theory on the learning of mathematics, but rather a more general theory of learning. Its study arises mainly from work across two groups of researchers who arrived at similar, but not exactly the same conclusions.

This website is my attempt to assemble a collection of high-quality, sequences of questions and examples using key principles from Variation Theory. By holding key features between questions and examples constant, together with the mathematical behaviour that I call reflect, expect, check, explain and the supporting role of the teacher, I believe we can help students better understand key

From a Variation Theory perspective, learning is seen as an expansion in awareness, in which students become aware of critical aspects of a disciplinary concept, skill or practice (abbreviated to concept for the rest of Learning Study model which was developed from Marton’s Variation Theory. The model has proved to be an important and effective means for improving teaching and learning. In this speech, I will report on the impact of the project on three levels: students, teachers and researchers. At the student level, the result is consistent with the Theory of Variation Marton and Booth’s Theory of Variation (1997) is drawn from the phenomenographical research tradition. It argues that there is no single way to understand, experience or think about a particular phenomenon; indeed there is considerable variation in people’s discernment.

In a learning study, variation theory is used both as a tool for analysis and as a tool for planning lessons. To obtain sustainability of a learning study, variation theory is often put forward as a main key for its sustainability. Teachers state that they use the knowledge obtained through learning study while planning their other lessons.
